We put the words of Jesus always before us, that he came to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, and to proclaim the Lord’s favor. We understand Jesus’ mission as revealing the Kingdom of God and establishing that Kingdom on earth. An amazing part of the Gospel—Jesus’ good news—is that we get to be a part of his mission of establishing the Kingdom.
We look to Jesus to learn how to love and serve the city around us. Jesus moved in compassion for others. He moved into the joys, sorrows, and suffering of others, to be with others in their distress and to be comfort and life to them. Just as we are called to love each other as a community, so we are called to restore, foster, and build communities around us, creating life-forming connections, and helping transform the landscapes in Long Beach.
