Jesus is the beloved son of God.  He declares the year of the Lord’s favor.  He casts out demons and heals the sick.  He attends a wedding and makes merry. And, at the end of these things, he returns to the source of his strength: the love of his Father.  We learn from Jesus how we need to rest and abide, and we start to see a filled out picture of what it means to live as the beloved children of God.

Jesus pronounces that the Spirit of the Lord is on him, then he immediately goes into an ivory tower and writes three long books on the theological significance of Isaiah 61.  No!  He immediately makes himself present with people to demonstrate what it means that he is the Lord of Life.  We watch Jesus cast our demons, heal Simon’s mother, and heal many others, and we, in turn, must think about what it means to be present with people and available to the Spirit of God, as Jesus was.

As Jesus reads from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah, he takes the prophetic tradition of justice on his shoulders.  What is justice?  It’s an oft-used word that people attach all sorts of meanings to.  What we see right away is that justice means our worship is not complete until it expresses itself as compassion, mercy, and care for others. What else can we learn from this word and Jesus’ reading from Isaiah?

Tim Culling, pastor of Restoration Church Long Beach, leads us through Luke 4.  Jesus, in his hometown synagogue in Nazareth, reads Isaiah 61, essentially proclaiming himself God’s chosen servant.  We see that Jesus’ notion of salvation and who it is for is much larger than those around him, which provokes us into the question, “Who do we think the gospel–Jesus’ good news–is for?”

In Jerusalem, a Pharisee named Nicodemus, enamored with and curious about the authority and power of this new teacher, comes by night to speak with Jesus.  Jesus leads Nicodemus towards an understanding of what it means to be born again, and we see that Jesus has come to save men from empty moralism and desperate hedonism, into life.

At Jesus’ baptism, which marked the beginning of his public ministry, God said to him, “You are my beloved son.”  Here we see a clear picture of Jesus’ good news, for God invites us into the same identity, as a child of God, that Jesus embodied.  The spiritual life is about receiving the blessing of our heavenly Father rather than trying to find a blessing through our own means or manipulation.
